J. Daniel Payne, Executive Director; Board Member

 

Daniel was born December 19, 1977. He was born and raised in the Hanover Courthouse area of Hanover County. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1999. He is the Executive Director of The McShin Foundation. He also is the owner and operator of, Widespread Solutions, LLC, a full service company specializing in home and property maintenance.

Daniel is a member of SAARA, Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance. In 2005, Daniel received Hanover County Ruritan's Community Service Award for his work in the county relating to substance use disorder recovery. In 2006, Daniel received Caron's Community Leadership Award for his development of the McShin Foundation's recovery home service model. A program that employees those who are new to recovery or fresh out of prison with a safe work environment. This model was developed to serve the newcomer with early financial stability and also serve as a funding flow for the foundation. The model benefits all, the home/business owner, the addict seeking recovery, and the foundation. Daniel has been featured in The Richmond Times Dispatch (Metro section), The Mechanicsville Local, The Community Observer (Chesterfield), The Virginia Associations of Community Service Boards 2005 Annual Report, and The USA Today (Life Section).

Mr. Payne is married to the former Cara McKenzie Cockey of Richmond. They reside in Hanover with their sons Jack and Gabriel. Mr. Payne has over 8 years of successful recovery.

Terry Kinum

 

Born September 3, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri. Moved to Richmond, VA in 1955 and graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in 1960. Graduate of University of Richmond with B.S. Degree in Marketing, 1964. United States Navy Officer from 1964 to 1971. Returned to Richmond to pursue a career in business. Retired from Pump and Equipment Co., Inc. in 2001. Sobriety date is June 22, 1982. Has been very active and committed to service work in recovery to include five years as a co-facilitator for after care at St, John's Treatment Center and some nine years in service work with the Virginia Department of Corrections and other penal facilities. Personal interests include golf and fishing as well as being a long term supporter of University of Richmond athletics, serving several terms on the Spider Club Board of Directors. Married to the former Donna Jean Ligon of Dallas, Texas and residing in Richmond.

 

Wayne Blanks, Board of Directors

Wayne was born January 3, 1955 in Newport News, VA. Having completed four years of college Wayne is a career salesman. He is currently employed as an outside sales rep for Euclid Chemical Co., serving VA, MD, and WV.

Wayne is an active Board Member of SAARA (Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance) of Virginia.

He is married to Audry and currently resides in Richmond. Wayne has successful long term recovery for over 13 years.

Nancy Robinson Spratley is retired from being a receptionist/outpatient counselor for Rubicon Inc. Spratley previously worked with the Department of Recreation and Parks as a Director of Playgrounds and therapeutic recreation instructor. She has also worked as a trainer for HIV/Aids prevention and education. She is the Regional Committee Member of Narcotics Anonymous for CARNA. A strong advocate for treatment for persons affected by substance use disorders. A woman of Faith.

 

Carol Pleasants, Board of Directors

Carol Pleasants

Carol Pleasants, an addict with 22 years of recovery. A proud addict in long term recovery, Carol is a participant in a 12-Step Program where she shares her experience, strength, and hope. She is available to the recovering community in any way she can serve. She believes in the McShin Foundation's mission to reach and help as many addicts as possible to become clean, productive members of society. She believes that any addict can lose the desire to use and find a new way of life.

John Rueger, Board of Directors

John Rueger

 

John was born August 12, 1947. He was born and raised in Richmond, VA. He started working at West End Machine and Welding in 1966. Mr. Rueger became owner of the business in 1972. He was a long term member of the Richmond Ski Club. He is a member of Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance (SAARA). He has over 5 years of successful recovery. He resides in the West End of Richmond with his wife Kathy. John has four children.

 

Charles "Chick" Jordan, Board of Directors

Charles "Chick" Jordan

 

A native of Virginia Beach, Mr. Jordan graduated from the University of Virginia in 1973. He has worked in the hotel, restaurant, and catering business for the last thirty years. Mr. Jordan has been active in the industry association. He has served on the Board of Directors for twenty years and was president of the Virginia Restaurant Association twice and the chairman of the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association in 2000. Since 1988 he has owned his catering business Catercorp in Hanover County and The Marquee Event Hall in Richmond. He is an active member of Second Baptist Church with his wife Elaine, and their three sons.

 

Susan Seward, Board of Directors

She is a native Richmonder and 1978 graduate of VCU School of Social Work. She has been active in the community with many volunteer roles and board memberships. Her particular passion is working with teens & young adults. As a member of Bon Air Baptist and Northstar Community, Susan is a liason with our faith based community. Susan an her husband reside in Midlothian.

 

David Dunston, Board of Directors

Born October 13, 1955 in Richmond, Virginia. Graduated from Hermitage High School in 1973. Employed with the Motor Carrier Division of the State Corporation Commission from June of 1973 until July of 1995 when the Motor Carrier functions were transferred to DMV. Currently serves as Case Manager at DMV. Was introduced to the McShin Foundation in 2005 when serving as chairman of the Building & Grounds committee at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church were McShin facilities are now located. Serves as liaison between McShin and its faith based partner, Hatcher Church. Personal interests including motorcycling and woodworking.

I am the Horticulturist and Grounds Department Manager at the Country Club of Virginia. I enjoy tennis, golf, swimming, and dancing.

 

 

Lynette Goode

Lynette Goode

 

Lynette Ruffin Goode was born in Southampton County, VA. She is the youngest of four children, two brothers, and on sister. She graduated from Southampton High School in the top 25% of her class. She then attended Virginia Union University, graduated with a BS Degree in Psychology. After graduating from VA Union University she then began working for Signet Bank, now called Wachovia. In 1995, a career advancement opportunity was made available to her. Then she became a proud employee of Blue Cross & Blue Shield Insurance Company of VA, which she was a benefit analyst for the Dominion Power dedicated unit… In 1997 there was a career interruption due to illness. As a result it was necessary that she retire.
In 2005 a life altering decision was made. Many years of being physically challenged she began writing a book called Keeping the Faith When It Seems like There Is No Hope. The book will be available for your reading pleasure Summer of 2009. In 2006 she founded D.E.O.N. (Drugs, Education, Obesity, & Nutrition) Intervention, a non-profit organization. In 2006 she was approached by one of her physicians to talk to a patient that was dealing with similar challenges that she had gone through, she then decided that there was a tremendous need to help others to overcome life obstacles. Before she became disabled she had such a passion to make a difference in children’s lives, she now volunteers her service as an officer of the court which is called (CASA) court appointed special advocate for Henrico County. If she is not busy enough she attended J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College where she received a Certification in Substance Abuse Counseling. In the past she was a mentor for the Virginia Heroes. She is a motivational speaker.

She currently sits on the following boards:
1. DEON Intervention, Inc. – Founder & Chairman of the Board
2. The McShin Foundation
3. Grayson Park Community Advocate

She is affiliated with:
1. Henrico County Public Schools after school program funded by 21 Century Grant.
2. St. Mary’s Hospital Gastric Bypass Support Group
3. Christian Tabernacle Full Gospel Baptist Church of Chesterfield, where Dr. Robert T. Williams, Sr. is pastor – She serves as a youth leader, president of outreach ministry & resource coordinator for the youth department.

She currently resides in Henrico County, VA with her husband of 19 years. One child was born of the married and she is currently a full-time student at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. She lives by a quote from her book “Always keep faith & hope alive”.

 

 

James "Jimmy" L. Brooks, Board of Directors

James "Jimmy" L. Brooks

 

Mr. Brooks has been in successful long term recovery since September 17, 1985. He is the father of two children, Jim Jr. ,26, and Morgan Cheyene, 12. Mr. Brooks is a 1995 Cum Laude graduate of J. Sargeant Reynolds, where he recieved an AAS in Horticulture. Jimmy says: "I would not trade my journey for anything. I truly believe in what I am doing for my recovery and the McShin Foundation!!"

Matthew Daniel, Board of Directors

Matthew Daniel

Matthew was born and raised in Mechanicsville VA. He is a 1985 graduate of Lee Davis High School in Mechanicsville and attended East Carolina University for 3 years. He also has 4 certificates in Auto Mechanics and is a certified peer to peer coach. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the drums and percussion. He works for Craig Paving and Excavation as their Estimator and is an active member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church.

With 4 years clean in long term recovery, he is a member of Faces and Voices of Recovery, NCADD and SAARA. Matthew was in the McShin pilot program at Pamunkey Regional Jail and also went through the re-entry program McShin offers. He is an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society as a Team Recruitment Chair for the Mechanicsville Relay for Life, and drives for the Road To Recovery program.

Mr. Daniel has 2 boys , 13 and 9 , and is grateful every day for recovery , and being able to give back.
